The Private Championship Golf Course is the Epicenter

Arnold Palmer’s vision for Orchid Island was more than just creating a golf course; it was about fostering a lifelong passion for the game while connecting players across generations. Stretching from 4,231 to 7,226 yards, the par-72 course both embraces and tests every player. The course’s versatility, highlighted by nine tee combinations, has hosted prestigious tournaments like the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. Beyond the greens, training and practice facilities, including a double-sided driving range and practice bunkers, support every player’s growth.

Director of Golf David Champagne agrees the course’s design is a rare find. “We have 18 unique holes that are designed in a way that celebrates our island setting,” shares Champagne. “Palmer’s signature touches like the grasses, rock walls, and dogleg hole layouts are spread throughout the course, making it memorable for pros and amateurs alike.” See what else David and other Orchid Island Members have to share about the distinctive course design.

For Member Greg Clark, the wildlife add a special character to the course. Member Greg Clark agrees that the wildlife adds a special character to the course. “The wildlife is neat,” shared Clark. “We’ve got white pelicans here in the winter that are spectacular to see. You see the osprey grabbing their lunch out of the lakes, occasionally an eagle here and there, and you’ve got the otters that you’ll see running between the ponds. That all provides a bit of a diversion from your golf game, particularly when it’s not going well.”

Summer Updates Just Completed

Orchid Island also prides itself on undertaking revitalization projects that preserve the course’s distinctive character while elevating its playability. This past summer, the course underwent a comprehensive enhancement project with this very goal in mind. A pivotal element of these updates is the introduction of new Bermuda grass greens, which promise a more consistent and smoother surface for an enjoyable putting experience. Additionally, several bunkers have been redesigned to guarantee optimal sand conditions, providing both strategic challenges and improved playability. The newly revitalized course will reopen for Members during Welcome Back Weekend in November.

Life on purpose golfing at orchid island

Where Championship Oceanfront Golf and Community Unite

As the social centerpiece of the community, Orchid Island is home to an 18-hole championship golf course designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer. Certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, every turn within this rare barrier island course welcomes delightful surprises from its natural neighbors. White pelicans, roseate spoonbills, and daily sightings of migratory birds and wildlife capture any golfer’s attention. Yet, what truly makes it exceptional is the bonds forged on its greens. From the serenity of sunrise tee-offs to shared laughter over refreshing drinks at the clubhouse just a golf cart ride away, Orchid Island is centered on nurturing genuine, lasting relationships. Take a look inside the Orchid Island Life on purpose multimedia brochure, providing an in-depth glimpse into the collective experiences of its Members on and off the golf course.

Director of Golf David Champagne ensures Members are having a memorable experience both on and off the course. “Golf at Orchid Island goes well beyond just having a well-designed and maintained course,” shared Champagne. “It’s really about how our Members spend time together. We have activities for more experienced golfers, but more often than not, we’ve got low handicappers playing with high handicappers and everyone feels welcome. We see a lot of smiles out there before and after the rounds.”

Natural Wonders Filled with Wildlife

Orchid Island’s location is also ideal for those who relish spending time outdoors or on the water. Kayak Cove provides direct access to the saltwater estuaries of the Indian River Lagoon, the most biologically diverse waterway in North America. Members love to spend their days paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, and boating around the area’s salt and freshwater marshes, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks. On land, the Historic Jungle Trail crosses the entire Orchid Island neighborhood for a memorable stroll. This eight-mile sandy road along the Indian River leads to Pelican Island Sanctuary while providing a beautiful backdrop for palm tree hammocks and coastal wetlands. Residents of Orchid Island share these beautiful natural wonders with hundreds of species of Florida’s migratory birds and animals. From white pelicans and roseate spoonbills flying overhead to otters playing in the lagoon, nature lovers enjoy daily sightings of the natural neighbors that call Orchid Island home.

For Member Bill Kennedy, Orchid Island has allowed him the time to explore the natural world that surrounds him. Once an amateur bicycle racer, he’s now part of a stress-free group that cycles together on Sunday mornings, following wherever the wind takes them. “If the wind is north, we go north; if the wind comes out of the south, we go south,” says Bill. “We go about 25 miles – we make it so you can eat more. The best part about retirement in general though is not having too much to plan. Some days I think of something I haven’t done in a while and say, ‘Why not do that today?’ It’s not like I’m waking up to eight conference calls anymore.”

Whether starting off the day with a sunrise yoga session, surfing in the crystal-clear waves, or reading from the sand, the beach has a special appeal to every resident of the community. These grounds are also a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles and offer residents a peaceful, natural respite. Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are also a common sight off the coast, while the endangered whales occasionally skim the coast in January and February.

Eight Har-Tru tennis courts and two pickleball courts celebrate social connections, muscle movements, and friendly competition for players at all skill levels. A rejuvenating Spa, Member’s Lounge, and oceanfront dining are also popular destinations for Club Members. Executive Chef Chris Sozio’s gourmet farm-to-table dining and carefully curated cocktails are served with a gentle ocean breeze. Multi-purpose rooms are also home to numerous special interest clubs, including clubs for the arts, cards, Mahjong, gardening, sporting, and more.

By embracing pickleball and other sports, Member Mary Stewart learned that kindness is a part of the culture. “The first thing that surprised me was when someone called and asked me to join them for a round of golf, and they weren’t even people I knew very well,” she recalls. “There’s no judgement here either. After pickleball, a lot of us meet up at the Beach Club Turtle Bar. Last Friday, none of us recognized each other because the last time we’d seen one another, we were all sweaty and gross with no makeup. We all just laughed about it.”

Hawaiian Flair and Expert Experience

As Director of Racquet Sports, Kainoa Rosa coordinates and oversees every aspect of Orchid Island’s programming. Rosa might have just finished his first year at Orchid Island, but he brings with him over 20 years of experience on the courts. Originally from the scenic island of Hawaii, Kai started playing tennis when he was just five years old. Kai went on to play collegiately with a full tennis scholarship at the NCAA D2 University of Hawaii. He was ranked as high as 10th in singles and 8th in doubles in the nation’s most competitive D2 conference. After graduating, Kai coached at numerous high-performance tennis programs throughout the Pacific Northwest, including the Highline College Women’s tennis team. He then relocated to Tampa, where he spent six years working his way up in management as a Head Professional and eventually Director of Tennis & Operations at Apollo Beach Racquet & Fitness Club. Desiring to live closer to the beach and having heard about Orchid Island’s glowing reputation, Kai and his family made the move to Vero Beach.

Tennis Communities at Orchid Island instruction

“I had known that the previous director was here for 25 years, and any time you have an employee that’s somewhere for that long, especially in the hospitality industry, you know it’s a special place,” Kainoa says. “Everything I’ve experienced so far with the Membership and committees at Orchid Island is excellent. We’re very appreciative of the community that has made it a very easy transition for my family and me.”

Upcoming Racquet Sports Events

Tennis enthusiasts will relish the co-ed tennis programs, while the doubles tournaments will provide an opportunity for friendly competition and teamwork on the courts. For those aiming to prove their skills, a series of tournaments, including the Member-favored Club Championships will be a highlight of the season.

“There will be some fun and exciting events for all ages and skill levels coming up,” Rosa says, leaving Members anticipatedly waiting. “It will be a balance of both competition and social, and certainly some programming the Members haven’t seen before!”

Pickleball Expansion on the Horizon

Combining elements from tennis, ping pong, and badminton, pickleball has claimed the title of America’s fastest-growing sport for the past two years. Its desirable health benefits and social nature have made it a nationwide favorite, including among Members at Orchid Island. Recognizing the sport’s burgeoning popularity, Orchid Island has set its sights on expanding its pickleball offerings. The committee is currently in the planning stages for a new recreational area, which would feature six new pickleball courts, a basketball court, a children’s playground, a croquet lawn, and a bocce ball court. This exciting development will cater to the growing demand for pickleball and enhance the overall recreational experience for residents.

A Hands-On Approach

Indian River County is home to nonprofit organizations that leave a lasting impact on the community. Habitat for Humanity works both locally and globally to provide secure housing for all. The Learning Alliance is dedicated to enhancing education standards, aiming for 90% of students that read proficiently by third grade. Volunteers provide professional development for teachers, after school learning opportunities, and parental support for parents of young children. The Gifford Youth Orchestra brings enrichment to children’s lives through music and cultural arts education. Operation Hope’s volunteers coordinate weekly distributions of food, clothing, and household items to families in need. They also arrange school supplies, Thanksgiving baskets, and Christmas toy drives to ensure families can celebrate the joy of every season. Orchid Island Members take a hands-on approach to support these nonprofits through volunteering, organizing donation drives, and raising funds for their missions.

The Annual 5K Walk/Run is dedicated to benefitting a different charity each year. In July, the event rallied support for the Senior Resource Association’s Meals on Wheels program, raising $23,000. Thanks to the generosity of 74 race participants and 100 sponsors, this sum will directly fund daily hot meals and wellness checks for homebound local seniors. Another standout event, the Visiting Nurse Association’s Annual Golf-A-Thon, sees the county’s finest golf club pros compete at a local club. This year’s event on May 1st featured thirteen golf pros, including Director of Golf David Champagne, playing at Indian River Club. The event raised over $500,000 for the VNA, the sole hospice provider in Indian River County, ensuring compassionate end-of-life care and support for patients and their families.

Founding the Fellsmere Volunteer Medical Clinic

Despite retiring in 2006, Orchid Island Member Dr. Fredy Delacruz was not finished helping the local community. In July 2022, he opened the Fellsmere Volunteer Medical Clinic to serve uninsured residents ages 18 to 64. The clinic offers essential medical care to low-income individuals in the surrounding area, with two exam rooms, a waiting area, and a private office. A part-time nurse and appointment secretary volunteer their time as well to support the clinic’s operations. His commitment to serving the community extends beyond Fellsmere, as he also operates a similar clinic in Palm Bay and volunteers with Space Coast Volunteers in Medicine. The clinic stands as a testament to Member’s compassion to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those in need.

The Indian River Club was abuzz with chatter about the 13 local golf pros who competed during the 33rd Annual Golf-A-Thon to benefit the VNA & Hospice Foundation’s Charitable Care Program. Members of the local clubs where the pros work solicit funds each year to support the VNA mission to improve the quality of life for patients, regardless of their financial resources.

After playing more than 100 holes, the day concluded with a shoot-out emceed by Pat Gorman, who had played every year since the inaugural event in 1991. Having retired from Bent Pine Golf Club last year, he traded in his clubs for a microphone and provided some expert color commentary.

“Being the emcee for the shoot-out is a whole lot more fun than playing all those holes of golf,” quipped Gorman, congratulating everyone on a record-breaking year.

“We know that you all had a great day, and we’re so appreciative of your day, giving it up for us. So, thank you from the bottom of our VNA and Hospice Foundation hearts,” said Carol Kanarek, interim foundation chair, as everyone gathered poolside for an awards ceremony and cocktails.

“I am standing here as interim this year because we lost our very good friend Kathie Pierce in January. We know that Kathie is smiling at us right now, and she would be so thrilled to know when I tell you how much money we have raised. She is going to be giving us a big smile and a big hurrah,” said Kanarek, announcing that the event had raised $501,700.

“This event has raised a lot of money for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured,” said Michelle Deschane, VNA & Hospice Foundation director of development, thanking everyone for their support.

“I appreciate you being here and toughing it out for 100 plus holes that we played today,” said pro host Ian Killen of the Indian River Club, reiterating thanks to players and volunteers. “And to the members of the Indian River Club, thank you so much for allowing us to have this day.”

Vero Beach has a lot of great clubs with first-class facilities and distinguished memberships and they might be forgiven for resting a bit on their laurels – but they don’t.

The Moorings, Quail Valley, John’s Island, Riomar, Windsor, Grand Harbor and the Vero Beach Country Club all have undertaken multimillion-dollar upgrades in recent years – adding a “plus” to their ‘A’ grades.

Now Orchid Island – a small but stunningly beautiful residential golf and beach club – is joining the party in a big way, with a $10 million array of additions and improvements to club facilities.

Major golf course improvements, golf clubhouse renovation and expansion, and new pickleball courts, croquet lawn, basketball court, playground, and gazebo with a bar for outdoor socializing and small events all are on the schedule.

Another $10 million in additional upgrades is in the pipeline, but planning for the second phase is still in early stages and longtime club general manager Rob Tench did not want to discuss specifics.

“I think all good clubs have a similar mindset,” said Tench. “We want to make sure we are serving both current and future members and always improving.”

Orchid’s Arnold Palmer-designed golf course is under renovation now, with new greens and tee boxes going in and some greens and bunkers being reshaped as part of a project that will keep the course closed until Nov. 1.

The improvements were designed and are being supervised by Arnold Palmer Designs, the company Palmer started in the 1970s while still a PGA star, which has continued on since his death in 2016.

“We wanted Arnold Palmer Designs to do the work to maintain the integrity of the original design,” Tench told Vero Beach 32963 last week. “Brandon Johnson is our architect at the firm and he is doing a good job. He worked side-by-side with Arnold Palmer for many years, so he had a pretty good mentor!”

Preliminary blueprints for a major clubhouse renovation slated to begin next spring are currently being reviewed by the club’s Board of Governors, who are working with Peacock + Lewis, Architecture, Master Planning & Interior Design.

Located in Palm Beach Gardens, the firm specializes in private club architecture and has an impressive portfolio of projects in Vero, including John’s Island Beach Club and Quail Valley’s Royal Palm Pointe expansion.

“We are going to expand our outside dining, adding a bar and fire pit and more covered areas out there,” said Tench. “We’re also going to renovate and expand the pro shop. It is a pretty significant project.”

“Right now, part of the outside area is higher and the rest is low. In the renovation, we will bring everything up to the higher level to provide better views of the golf course,” and perhaps catch more fresh ocean breezes.

“We have our next meeting with the architects on July 19,” Tench added. “It takes a long time to get the plans finalized and secure all the permits and get materials ordered ahead of time so we can be ready to start, shovel in the ground, May 1.”

With its distinctive barrier island design, refreshing sea breezes, and abundant wildlife, Orchid Island’s championship golf course is renowned for providing an awe-inspiring experience. As the cherished centerpiece of this private club community near Vero Beach, the par-72 course was expertly crafted by Arnold Palmer to be enjoyable for Members of all skill levels. Beginning on May 1st, the course began a revitalization; aimed at improving playability while maintaining its captivating Audubon-worthy landscapes. Let’s take a closer look at the renovations planned to be completed in time for Orchid Island’s Welcome Back Weekend this November.

Barrier Island Golf Course with Orchid Island Members

Enhancing Playability for All Skill Levels

The improvements to Orchid Island’s golf course aim to improve playability for all levels of golfers. A key aspect of these updates is the introduction of new Bermuda grass greens, which will provide a more consistent and smoother surface for a delightful putting experience. Several bunkers will be redesigned to ensure optimal sand conditions that offer both strategic challenges and improved playability. The tee boxes will also be regrassed while retaining the course’s nine tee combinations that span from 4,231 to 7,226 yards. This allows the course to accommodate golfers of all skill levels while still providing the appropriate level of challenge. The rebuilding of the greens, enhancements to the overall landscaping, and renovations to other areas emphasize Orchid Island’s commitment to maintaining the highest quality golfing experience for Members, their families, and their guests.

Keeping the Course’s Distinctive Character

Recognized as an Audubon Certified Sanctuary since 2005, Orchid Island takes pride in its commitment to the environment and local wildlife. These renovations have been thoughtfully crafted to preserve the course’s core character, its harmonious connection to nature. Surrounded by two prolific waterways, the course is home to a thriving and bio-diverse ecosystem that adds a unique natural appeal to the golfing experience. Golfers have the privilege of encountering white pelicans, majestic herons, osprey, and more while hitting the links. As Members navigate the community in their golf carts, they often pause to appreciate the daily spectacles, which might include a sighting of a roseate spoonbill or a turtle crossing their path.

Rob Tench, the General Manager of Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, looks forward to how these upgrades will enhance the natural landscape. “The design and integrity of our Arnold Palmer course will not change, but the majority of the course will be exquisitely refreshed in order to continue to provide our Members with the best golf in Vero Beach,” said Tench. “Golf at all levels is one of the cornerstones of the social life at Orchid Island and we are excited to unveil the newly-refreshed course to our Members in November.”

An Active Golf Club Event Schedule

Once the course reopens in November, Members are looking forward to a diverse range of beloved tournaments and events that cultivate camaraderie and forge new friendships. Engaging activities such as Twilight Scrambles and Pairing Parties enable players to connect with others who share similar skills, while the Nine & Dine event concludes with a delightful meal, allowing participants to reflect on their game and enjoy the company of newfound friends and neighbors. For those seeking a challenge, the club offers a variety of men’s, women’s, and mixed team events, as well as prestigious competitions like the President’s Cup, the Orchid Cup, and other Club Championships. The Adult & Child 9-Hole Scrambles provide a perfect opportunity for building familial bonds across generations, and the highly anticipated Member Guest Day remains a favorite.

Hosting a memorable Fourth of July barbecue is as easy as apple pie when your backyard is a tropical oasis, and the menu is in the creative hands of a highly seasoned chef.

Native Canadians Steve and Jane Jones have embraced this all-American holiday—and many more—since acquiring their riverfront estate in the member-owned Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, a private barrier-island community spanning 600 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon. Purchased in March 2020, their 6,200-square-foot British West Indies–style residence has an outdoor living area rivaling that of a premier resort.

two patriotic cocktails
“It’s one of those backyards that’s so unique,” says Steve about the dramatic freeform pool, meandering paths, cabana, private dock, lush vegetation, and expansive loggia for alfresco dining. “When we bought the house, we reached out to the gardener, who had worked with the owner 17 years ago to recreate her vision of Hawaii. He continues to look after the grounds, and it’s kind of a wonderland.” A wonderland well deserved after decades of hard work, including an 18-year career at Coca-Cola Co. and the founding of Fairlife LLC, a health-and-wellness company that produces premium high-protein, ultrafiltered milk products.

The British West Indies-style home of Steve and Jane Jones is a riverfront oasis for friends and family.

Life at Coke was fast-paced and dynamic, Steve admits, as he assumed marketing and operational roles in Atlanta, London, Tokyo, and Houston, before his final job as corporate chief marketing officer. At 46, he wanted more entrepreneurial challenges. This wish led to several private equity deals and, ultimately, the launch of Fairlife, an experience he describes as the most rewarding of his business life.

patriotic table set up

By 2018, the Joneses were ready for a simpler but equally engaging life in Florida. They didn’t know the Sunshine State very well, so they spent the next two years exploring towns and communities, only to discover that life at Orchid Island checked all the boxes.

“You can’t beat living here,” says Steve. “It offers both ocean and Intracoastal living and a small but engaging community nestled around a great Arnold Palmer golf course. Add in excellent racquet sports, a fitness and wellness center, clubs and activities, and wonderful food and dining experiences, and it’s second to none.”

In 2020, the Joneses decided a riverfront property at Orchid Island was a perfect fit for their active and social lifestyle. “The river is full of life,” says Steve. “Between the pleasure craft, the yachts, the birds, and the dolphins, there is nonstop entertainment out there.”

“The house is on the larger side, so it’s far livelier when people are here,” he adds. “We’ve had parties for 50 to 100 guests with half inside and half outside and many people walking to the dock to look at dolphins. It’s a very versatile property.”

For their Fourth of July celebration, the Joneses planned a more intimate backyard gathering with seasonal, locally sourced cuisine prepared by Orchid Island’s Executive Chef Chris Sozio as well as colorful cocktails and mocktails created by Food and Beverage Director Alex Heater.

cooking the celebration meal

The all-American menu includes a garden salad composed of locally sourced baby lettuce, pickled heirloom carrots, and sweet peppers from Pepper Trail Farm; pickled cucumbers and assorted heirloom tomatoes from Aunt Zorada Farm; preserved apricots; and goat cheese tartines—all tossed in a luscious green goddess dressing.

full dinner plate
For the mains, Sozio fires up the outdoor grill to prepare Florida lobster tails and jumbo prawns with island spice butter and grilled lemons, prime bistro steak with citrus herb salsa, and chicken paillard with Donna’s corn relish.

For a light, no-fuss dessert, Sozio created a patriotic parfait of macerated strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries layered with vanilla bean and Orchid Island Honey–whipped cream cheese, presented with a gluten-free chocolate pecan cookie.

Sozio, who has been pleasing discerning palates at Orchid Island since 2014, says, “Our commitment to using locally sourced products as often as possible even extends to an often-used sweetener. We have beehives on the property from which honey is extracted, bottled, and sold in our pro shops as Orchid Island Honey. It’s become a popular staple in our club’s kitchens and in the homes of many of our members.”
