Vero Beach Lands on the List of the Top 10 Best Beach Towns to Live In the USA

Turn every day into a vacation when you move to one of these beach towns.

Ocean breezes, endless sunshine, daily walks along the sand, and a laid-back way of life all entice Americans to relocate to the country’s many beach towns. From charming cities on the California coast to Florida’s popular shores, there are dozens of destinations to consider, so it can be hard to pick one as your new home.

Thankfully, personal finance site WalletHub has determined the best beach towns to live in around the United States, ranking them according to 63 indicators, including affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and overall quality of life. The top 10 ocean towns to live in (listed below) are unsurprisingly concentrated in states boasting ample coastline, like Florida, California, and Hawaii.

WalletHub also looked at data like violent crime rates, water temperatures, nightlife establishments and restaurants per capita, and more to help you make the right decision. And while our list focuses on beach towns near the ocean, the site also rounded up the best lake beach towns to live in (Traverse City, Michigan; Folsom, California; and Redmond, Washington snagged the top three spots, with others in North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin in the top 10).

10. Vero Beach, Florida

Located on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Vero Beach scored well for weather, safety, and quality of life. Living in Vero Beach means easy access to the beaches and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including water sports and fishing.

Most travelers know the Treasure Coast region of Florida as a popular second home destination with beautiful, secluded beaches, yet its history is vast and a true-to-life treasure. Let’s dig into the history of the Treasure Coast name, and how it is still embedded in this beautiful Atlantic coast region.

There’s Gold to Be Found

Three hundred years ago, a fleet of ships filled with treasure made their way along the Atlantic coast to transport gold, jewels, and other valuable metals back to Spain. Just weeks into the journey, a turbulent hurricane stirred the ocean before them. The crew became trapped in the Bahama Channel with no means to free the ships. Eleven of the 12 ships were ripped apart by the high winds and sank to the seafloor. Only one ship survived, and their crew tried to recover the bounty. It is assumed that two-thirds of the treasure remains beneath the sand on the area beaches.

In the 1950s, another ship met its fate along the shoreline near the Sebastian Inlet, exposing parts of the ancient ships. The ships had sunk in relatively shallow water allowing the strong currents to push some of the jewels closer to shore, and soon beachcombers began to find gold coins and other valuable pieces. In fact, along the Vero Beach coastline near Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, professional salvagers would eventually find over $4.5 million in jewels and treasure.

How Did Treasure Coast Get Its Name?

So how did the name appear? The Treasure Coast was created by writers at the Vero Beach Press Journal newspaper just prior to the recovery of the Spanish treasure. Since the first coin was found in 1961, the area known as the Treasure Coast is known to travelers all over the world, and gold is still occasionally found along the shoreline.

With an amazing history of its own, Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club is a unique treasure to its Members. This private golf and beach club community is filled with Members who feel even more fortunate to call this amazing place home. The West-Indies-style Beach Club serves as a gathering place for families and friends to reunite. Even better, Orchid Island spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian River, where a new community kayak launch brings adventurous homeowners up close and personal with area wildlife. On a barrier island tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon, Orchid Island is home to more than breathtaking views. Among championship golf, tennis, and more than a mile of pristine, secluded beach; the tranquil bike trails surrounding the Club have become immensely popular among members. Discover the many places that are sure to capture your attention and may even compel you to stop along the way!

Jungle Trail

The Treasure Coast gives sanctuary to 1,500+ species of Florida’s migratory birds and wildlife: manatees, river otters, turtles, bobcats, and the ever-majestic white pelicans. There’s no better way to explore nature than by traveling on the historic Jungle Trail, which cuts through the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Captain Forester Hammock Preserve, and of course, Orchid Island. We recommend starting your journey at the front of Orchid Island Drive and heading southbound on this scenic route. Bike riders are never short of encounters with the gorgeous surroundings and beautiful wildlife.

Jones Pier

Cycling is a low-impact form of exercise that increases strength and stamina, which can help protect you from serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Plus, you get to experience natural beauty in the surrounding areas of Orchid Island. Three miles from the Club, you’ll stumble upon Jones Pier, a hidden gem overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. Part of the Jones Pier Conservation Area, it encompasses rich history and provides the public with educational and historical display exhibits on native wildlife, foliage, and the origin story. After admiring the gorgeous view and potentially a few dolphins, venture back on the Jungle Trail and head east on Old Winter Beach Road all the way to A1A.

Disney Vero Beach Resort

As you venture north up A1A, you’ll see a popular destination right within our treasured town: Disney’s Vero Beach Resort! If this mile-marker has your legs burning, you can drop in to browse the gift shop or grab a bite to eat at the Wind & Waves Market. Don’t be surprised if you find a hidden Mickey or two as you pass through!

Beach Bites & Wabasso Beach Park

As you continue your morning cycle, you may spot a little restaurant further up A1A. Beach Bites is far from your average neighborhood café, housing a general store, souvenir shop, watersport rental, and restaurant all in one! Grab a souvenir or stop in to pick up a smoothie. Right on the beach, you’ll find just about everything you’ll need at this checkpoint.

Wabasso Beach Park lies down the street from Beach Bites. Make sure to be on the lookout for sea turtle nests as you admire ocean views from the miniature boardwalk along the Atlantic’s Treasure Coast.

Orchid Island Beach Club

As your expedition connects its circle, you may see a familiar pink building signifying the return to Orchid Island Beach Club! An issuance of red bands attached to the handlebar stem of your bike lifts the gate arms, allowing uninterrupted riding for members, ideal for biking to and from the community.

The sights and sounds that greet members daily and the benefits of bike rides here are just reminders that no other community compares to Orchid Island. The Club works hard to preserve a way of life for not only the natural neighbors who live in the area but the people who live here as well. The Club’s intimate layout creates the perfect environment for these creatures to thrive in concert with our members. The Arnold Palmer Golf Course is proudly Audubon certified, and the secluded beach offers more than a mile of private oceanfront. For those who want to get close to nature and enjoy the creature comforts of home, the Beach Club and country club amenities are second to none.

Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club holds an annual 5K Walk/Run to support area organizations. Each year the proceeds from the event benefit a local charity or cause, which is determined earlier in the year by the Club’s Fitness & Wellness Committee. This year the Committee selected United Against Poverty IRC (UP). Due to lingering concerns regarding the Covid-19 virus, an additional option to participate in raising donations for UP was available to Members. We held a virtual run the week prior to the 5K Walk/Run that took place at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club. The Fitness team including Denise Duda, Director of Fitness, Wellness & Spa and Tiffany Long, Manager of the Tennis & Fitness Pro Shop, were able to track the miles that Members walked/ran throughout the week leading up to the actual physical 5K that took place at the Club. Progress was logged at the Tennis & Fitness Center as well as on our Club website.

This year’s 19th Annual 5K Walk/Run was held Friday, April 2nd and despite cool temperatures and windy conditions, over 50 Members and Family Guests participated. A big thank you to all 66 Members who generously sponsored the race as well as 18 virtual runners. Matt Tanner, Executive Director and George Cooper, Development Director were both on hand to personally thank all donors and participants and give an overview of how the proceeds from the 19th Annual 5K will be used.

Member Bill Badia came in as fastest Male Member finisher and Member Elke Higgins was celebrated as fastest Female Member finisher. Our virtual race mileage thermometer received the biggest bump up from Mr. Phil Gulley who logged his miles in daily for our week-long virtual run.

“Orchid Island is thrilled to support United Against Poverty, an organization that gives so much to the Community. Their work in these difficult times have made a difference to many. It is an honor to be associated with them.” shared Bill Kennedy, Orchid Island Board of Governors Tennis & Fitness Committee Chair.

A check presentation took place on Thursday, April 22, 2021. United Against Poverty IRC was extremely grateful especially in these trying times. We had our greatest donation to date. Orchid Island Golf Club was able to provide a check of $18,000 to United Against Poverty. Matt Tanner, Executive Director, was on hand to except this check.

“Thanks to the support that the Orchid Island Community has shown in our mission, the team at United Against Poverty is positioned to continue to innovate, build coalitions in our Community and have the agility and resources to rise to meet the greatest needs of our Neighbors. Our Hand UP vs a Hand Out model has impacted the lives of thousands of Residents across our great county, and with the generosity of Orchid Island, we will only further expand our impact.” expressed Matt Turner, Executive Director, United Against Poverty.

Whether the preferred medium is oil, paint, sculpture, or photography, it is evident that members of Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club’s Art Club (OIAC) are inspired by the breathtaking nature thriving throughout their beloved private community as well as the nearby Environmental Learning Center (ELC). A new exhibit, “Nature at Its Best” is currently on display at the ELC for all to enjoy. Featuring more than 30 pieces of art, the exhibit is something local nature and art enthusiasts will not want to miss.

“Nature at Its Best” promotes the ELC Mission to educate, inspire and empower all people to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being. Near and dear to many Orchid Island residents, the ELC’s beauty has often served as inspiration for many members of OIAC. As one of Vero Beach’s hot spots, the ELC has long been the place for the community to explore the sights, sounds, reflections, and sweet breezes of this beautiful area. Show coordinator, Judy Stach, a frequenter of the ELC and past president of OIAC, once took her grandchildren on the evening pontoon boat ride and found an abundance of new subject matter, noting “flora and fauna enriches the artist’s spirit. This environment is unspoiled and unrivaled in its pure representation of simple pleasures that surround us all in a very tumultuous world.”

OIAC is one of many special interest social clubs at Orchid Island. According to Stach, it “was formed in 2012 with a goal to include all who wanted to learn about art and create for themselves, and most importantly, to share their talents with each other.” Open to all Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club members, OIAC is an active membership hosting workshops and member exhibits yearly.

Seven Orchid Island Artisans

Judy Stach is among seven decorated artists featured in the gallery including Muci Clemens, Susan Atwood Daniels, Michele Henry, Lou Lower, Ruth Martin, and Cree Scudder. Judy’s work has appeared in several magazines nationwide, with her forty-year retrospective recently being the featured article in Jersey Shoe Magazine Spring Summer 2020. Cree has been a dedicated painter for over 25 years with experiences studying art in Princeton, NJ, La Jolla, CA, and our beloved Vero Beach, Fl. Susan Atwood Daniels has built a lasting career creating museum-quality Nantucket Lightship Baskets, handcrafted beaded jewelry, and acrylic paintings on stretched canvases in addition to watercolors, oil, and mixed media works. Moving full-time to Florida 10 years ago, Michele Henry began a new, more fun chapter in her life, recording the extraordinary scenery, wildlife, and waterways, making them her own. “Nature at Its Best” not only brings Vero’s unique surroundings to life, but the exhibit also embodies each Orchid Island artist’s storied past.

To an outsider, a lot of the Country Clubs in Florida seem to be similar. They have the golf and the tennis and of course the big, fancy clubhouse. However, at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, located in the Town of Orchid, in Vero Beach, “club” means much, much more. This gated private club community tucked away on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon features ten “Clubs within the Club” with a full schedule of events for Members. The variety of special interest activities allows Members to get to know each other beyond the golf course and fitness center creating lasting friendships among Members, an attribute that makes this private community truly unique.

Whatever the choice of medium, the Art Club fosters talents and appreciates varying levels of experience. From watercolor to photography, Members can enjoy sharing their ideas as well as learning something new with a variety of classes, lectures, and even trips to local museums. Art Club talents are also showcased in the Member Art Show. Those who have been part of a choral group in the past will be pleased to find the Chorus Club. Now in its tenth year, the Chorus Club is committed to creating joy through music whether it be performing across the Treasure Coast or at Orchid Island. Club Cinema is offered for those who like to spend an evening watching the big screen. Cards & Mah Jongg

There are many Bridge Clubs featured at Orchid Island including Monday Summer Club, Couples and Seasonal Bridge. Seasonal Bridge is sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). The clubs are for lovers of the game as well as those looking for a fun night with their neighbors. Newly formed in 2020, the Canasta Club invites players of all skill levels to join in on this fun card game. Mah Jongg, an ancient Chinese game with pre-set hands and tiles is another game of skill with a following at Orchid Island.

Gardening

The Garden Club is always looking to grow its membership. Those looking to learn about the flora and fauna unique to Florida, or how to grow an herb garden will find opportunity in this club. In its fifth season, the Garden Club holds events on campus, including monthly displays in the Card Room, as well as taking field trips to local farms and other beautiful places.

Sporting

With three quail plantations approximately an hour away, and a sporting clay facility nearby, the Gun Club offers opportunities for the outdoor sportsperson. For those who prefer to get out on the water, the Orchid Island Yacht Club (OIYC) offers a waterside event or a nautical outing as ways to find fun with these maritime enthusiasts. No boat is required to join this group that has grown to more than 100 members since 2002.

At Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, “Clubs within the Club” allow more than 750 Members to share their passions with other Members on a more personal level through an array of activities. Camaraderie is built among neighbors with common interests in this private seaside community.

With more than 1,500 species of Florida’s migratory birds and wildlife in the area, it is not uncommon to happen upon white pelicans, ospreys, river otters, and spoonbills as a regular part of the day at Orchid Island. Rare Sightings

Members of Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club experience the best of Florida’s natural beauty right in their own backyards. Literally! The Arnold Palmer championship golf course at Orchid Island is an Audubon Certified Sanctuary. It’s home to some of the coolest residents, including the rare white pelicans. Playful otters also call this place home. They’re often spotted trotting between the lakes. Residents who live on the course can even see them right from their kitchen windows. The Club has also installed a variety of bird boxes throughout the course. And just this year, one of them was the birthplace of a baby Screech Owl.

Turtle Nesting Grounds

The private Beach Club overlooks more than a mile of secluded beach. It’s common for members to see ospreys, pelicans and turtles as they walk or relax. And it’s great for shore fishing, too. Even more amazing, the beach here is a nesting ground for hundreds of these turtles. Each year they return to lay their eggs and after a few months in the sand, the hatchlings make their journey to the ocean. Residents who live in the beachfront condos here have a front row seat.

A One-Of-A-Kind Ecosystem

The Indian River Lagoon is known as one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the world. The brand new kayak launch at Orchid Island gives Members easy access to some of nature’s most beautiful scenes and most interesting wildlife. Here, it’s common to see manatees, egrets and pink Rosette Spoonbills, among many others. Dolphins are even seen in the river here quite often. Most of the residences on the river have their own private docks as well.

Old Florida History

Even more unique is the historic Jungle Trail that runs right through Orchid Island. Used as the original A1A, it’s now a great place for a bike ride or a walk – and closed to motor vehicle traffic. Members often spot Gopher Tortoises here and there are even some varieties of wild orchids growing.

Whether you are floating down the Indian River Lagoon, teeing up on the 14th fairway, or taking a walk on the secluded beach, you’ll always catch a glimpse of something special. Orchid Island is full of unique residential spaces to enjoy, but it’s the experiences with the wildlife every day that make living here one-of-a-kind.

Everyone has different reasons for moving to a beach town. Some appreciate the small town atmosphere, while others like how nature is essentially untouched. The Town of Orchid, just outside of Vero Beach, is one such example. Many say that Orchid Island is the perfect place for them because of the weather, the people, and the overall feeling you have in a small beach town. Here are a few reasons why you should move to our beach town.

Mood: Relaxation

It’s hard to find a frown on someone’s face when they come back from the beach. Living so close to it, it’s easy to see why the residents here seem to be in a good mood all of the time. Different parts of the oceanfront environment come together to make beachgoers feel good. The sound of the waves hitting the shore provides a calming atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the day. Sunny days are abundant here and fill you with vitamin D, naturally raising your mood as well.

Nature Abounds

The oceanfront features a diverse and vibrant ecosystem not found anywhere else. Take a look up to the sky – ospreys, eagles, and pelicans soar through the air. On the horizon, dolphins jump from the water, and schools of fish teem below the surface. From May to October, you’re likely to find a leatherback sea turtle along the shoreline laying her eggs. Check out the historic Jungle Trail, it runs right through Orchid Island, and you’re likely to catch a rare white pelican flying above the trees.

Activities and Things to Do

If there’s one thing that we can say about beach towns, it’s that they have their own way of doing things, whether it be work or play – but especially play. Swing and dance under the moonlight at the Night Sounds Concert Series, or learn of the area’s eclectic art scene at the First Friday Gallery Stroll. Then again, you don’t need a party to have fun here. Spend a few rounds playing golf, or take some time to walk along the beach.

Everyone has a reason for moving to the Town of Orchid. Some of them like the friendly locals and warm neighbors. Some appreciate living so close to the beach. Others enjoy shopping, the atmosphere, and being healthy. One thing that we can say about life in a beach town is that it’s easier. It’s easy to get around on foot, but some residents prefer getting places via golf cart. It’s one of those things that make Orchid Island stand out amongst other clubs.

For those who want to get close to nature and enjoy the creature comforts of home, the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club amenities are second to none.   Orchid Island works hard to preserve a way of life for, not only the natural neighbors who live on the Treasure Coast, but the residents as well. Members and residents also enjoy the private beach.

This private community is committed to providing a level of service that stands out from the rest. Golfing here is unparalleled, as the Arnold Palmer designed, 18-hole course is not only renowned among courses, but also holds an Audubon Certified Sanctuary status for its commitment to natural preservation.
