Meet Chef Chris Sozio

From working at his father’s restaurant in Pennsylvania with his three brothers to helping with family gatherings, Sozio found his passion for the culinary industry at a very young age. He loved the feeling of how happy friends and family were when they were brought together through food and wished to share that feeling with others. His passion led him to The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, where his eyes were opened to the vast culinary world. After graduating from the Culinary Institute in 1986, Sozio has worked in a number of fine dining restaurants and resorts across the country, including The Mayflower Inn in Connecticut, The Manele Bay Hotel in Hawaii, Caneel Bay Resort in the Virgin Islands, and most recently John’s Island in Vero Beach, Florida. Since joining Orchid Island in the fall of 2014, Chef Sozio has been providing world-class culinary options to Members at Orchid Island.

“For me, the reward is making the Members happy with our food,” said Sozio. “They have been genuinely and sincerely appreciative of the Culinary Program that we have built over the years and continue to evolve.”

A Fresh Farm-to-Table Dining Approach

Carefully balancing daily specials with Club favorites, Chef Sozio is well-known throughout Orchid Island for his farm-to-table philosophy. Sozio and his team source produce and fish directly from local, family-owned farms and distributors within the surrounding Indian River and Okeechobee counties. He coordinates his menus with the seasons and also with what comes into port that day to secure the freshest, flavor-filled dishes that are sure to please any palate.

“Writing our menus daily gives us the ability to serve the freshest fish and seafood that the fishermen are catching, while the fresh produce that the farmers are harvesting adds a nice variety to the menus,” said Sozio. “A couple of farmers literally ask me what I would like them to grow for the upcoming season. That is virtually unheard of out there.”

Oceanfront Private Club Dining

Along with a carefully curated menu, Sozio and his team work to create a welcoming and coastally inspired ambiance within each of the Club’s three dining venues. The Pool Grille and Turtle Bar offer an easygoing setting where friends can come together, bonding over burgers and cocktails while watching dolphins swim along the Atlantic coastline. The “19th hole” Golf Club offers a casual fare of salads, sandwiches, and flatbreads in a variety of atmospheres, from the main dining room to an extended patio overlooking grand views of the fairways. Finally, the Beach Club’s elegant dining venue is home to five-star creations that include everything from healthy selections to innovative cuisines and decadent desserts – all while overlooking the stunning azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Best of all, residents can hop on their golf carts and be at any of the venues within mere minutes.

Behind Chef Sozio, a dedicated team of culinary artists keeps each venue running smoothly daily. “From the time I started in 2014 until now, our Food & Beverage sales have more than doubled, which means our Members are staying on property to dine more and more. This provides us a good sense of our accomplishment, but we are only able to achieve this with the hard work and dedication of our Culinary Staff. All are equally important to the success of the food program and to Orchid Island.”

Named one of Florida’s Top 7 Tennis Communities by the Private Community Registry, Orchid Island’s racquet program is consistently recognized for its scenic beauty and welcoming culture. Behind it all, the Club’s new Director of Racquet Sports coordinates and oversees every aspect of the eight Har-Tru tennis courts and two pickleball courts. Kainoa is no stranger to either sport, bringing over 20 years of racquet experience to Orchid Island. Here’s your chance to meet Kainoa, or Kai for short, and learn more about how he plans enhance the racquet program at Orchid Island.

Turning His Passion into a Full-Time Profession

Since he was a child, Kainoa Rosa has always had a passion for racquet sports. Originally from the scenic islands of Hawaii, Kai started playing tennis when he was only five years old. After moving to Seattle when he was seven, he started playing more often, coached by his mother and uncle, who were both well-known tennis players in the state. Kai went on to play collegiately with a full tennis scholarship at the NCAA D2 University of Hawaii. He was ranked as high as 10th in singles and 8th in doubles in the nation’s most competitive D2 conference. Leading up to his graduation, he decided that he wanted to continue to follow his passion.

“I was deciding what I wanted to do, and at the end of the day, I decided I wasn’t quite done with tennis,” Kainoa says. “I decided I wanted to make tennis my career pathway, and the coaching adventure started from there.”

Kai Director of Racquet Sports

After graduating, Kai moved back to Seattle and coached at numerous high-performance tennis programs throughout the Pacific Northwest region, including the Highline College Women’s tennis team. He then relocated to Tampa, where he spent six years working his way up in management as a Head Professional and eventual Director of Tennis & Operations at Apollo Beach Racquet & Fitness Club. Desiring to live closer to the beach and having heard about Orchid Island’s glowing reputation, Kai and his family made the move to Vero Beach.

A New Generation of Racquet Sports

Excited to bring his expertise to Orchid Island, Kainoa plans to bring the Club’s programming at the eight Har-Tru tennis courts and two pickleball courts to an even higher level. Members can look forward to an expansion of the pickleball program for players of all ages and experience levels, with plans to introduce exhibitions, social tournaments, mixers, and more. He plans to elevate the tennis program as well, incorporating innovative events for Members. Kainoa emphasizes the importance of not only racquet sports but maintaining a fun and social environment for all.

“I can’t give away all my secrets yet, but there will be some fun and exciting events that are coming up,” Rosa says, leaving Members anticipatedly waiting. “It will definitely be a balance of both competition and social, and certainly some programming the membership hasn’t seen before!”

A Cherished Community of Active, Engaged Members

From supportive staff to a large Member involvement, Kainoa knows that what makes Orchid Island truly unique are the Members who call this community home. Kai is grateful for the opportunity to work alongside an incredible team and is optimistic about the future of the racquet sport facilities.

“I had known that the previous director was here for 25 years, and any time you have an employee that’s somewhere for that long, especially in the hospitality industry, you know it’s a special place,” Kainoa says.

Kainoa Rosa expresses how thankful he and his family are for the people of Orchid Island. “Everything I’ve experienced so far with the membership and committees at Orchid Island is excellent. The community has made it very easy to transition for my family and I. We’re very appreciative of the staff and the membership here and helping us move our lives. We’re very excited to get started!”

Vero Beach Lands on the List of the Top 10 Best Beach Towns to Live In the USA

Turn every day into a vacation when you move to one of these beach towns.

Ocean breezes, endless sunshine, daily walks along the sand, and a laid-back way of life all entice Americans to relocate to the country’s many beach towns. From charming cities on the California coast to Florida’s popular shores, there are dozens of destinations to consider, so it can be hard to pick one as your new home.

Thankfully, personal finance site WalletHub has determined the best beach towns to live in around the United States, ranking them according to 63 indicators, including affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and overall quality of life. The top 10 ocean towns to live in (listed below) are unsurprisingly concentrated in states boasting ample coastline, like Florida, California, and Hawaii.

WalletHub also looked at data like violent crime rates, water temperatures, nightlife establishments and restaurants per capita, and more to help you make the right decision. And while our list focuses on beach towns near the ocean, the site also rounded up the best lake beach towns to live in (Traverse City, Michigan; Folsom, California; and Redmond, Washington snagged the top three spots, with others in North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin in the top 10).

10. Vero Beach, Florida

Located on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Vero Beach scored well for weather, safety, and quality of life. Living in Vero Beach means easy access to the beaches and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including water sports and fishing.

Most travelers know the Treasure Coast region of Florida as a popular second home destination with beautiful, secluded beaches, yet its history is vast and a true-to-life treasure. Let’s dig into the history of the Treasure Coast name, and how it is still embedded in this beautiful Atlantic coast region.

There’s Gold to Be Found

Three hundred years ago, a fleet of ships filled with treasure made their way along the Atlantic coast to transport gold, jewels, and other valuable metals back to Spain. Just weeks into the journey, a turbulent hurricane stirred the ocean before them. The crew became trapped in the Bahama Channel with no means to free the ships. Eleven of the 12 ships were ripped apart by the high winds and sank to the seafloor. Only one ship survived, and their crew tried to recover the bounty. It is assumed that two-thirds of the treasure remains beneath the sand on the area beaches.

In the 1950s, another ship met its fate along the shoreline near the Sebastian Inlet, exposing parts of the ancient ships. The ships had sunk in relatively shallow water allowing the strong currents to push some of the jewels closer to shore, and soon beachcombers began to find gold coins and other valuable pieces. In fact, along the Vero Beach coastline near Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, professional salvagers would eventually find over $4.5 million in jewels and treasure.

How Did Treasure Coast Get Its Name?

So how did the name appear? The Treasure Coast was created by writers at the Vero Beach Press Journal newspaper just prior to the recovery of the Spanish treasure. Since the first coin was found in 1961, the area known as the Treasure Coast is known to travelers all over the world, and gold is still occasionally found along the shoreline.

With an amazing history of its own, Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club is a unique treasure to its Members. This private golf and beach club community is filled with Members who feel even more fortunate to call this amazing place home. The West-Indies-style Beach Club serves as a gathering place for families and friends to reunite. Private club events and holidays are held in the dining room, and families enjoy fun in the sun along the Atlantic Ocean. Not to mention the resort-style pool and amenities such as tennis, pickleball, and a fitness center available to members.

The True Treasures Beyond the Beach

Even better, Orchid Island spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian River, where a new community kayak launch brings adventurous homeowners up close and personal with area wildlife. As an Audubon-certified nature preserve, the idyllic setting is highly desired by those seeking a healthy outdoor lifestyle in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Luxury residential properties are in demand and often sell within minutes of becoming available. Custom estate residences, courtyard homes, cottages, or oceanfront condominiums range from the $800s to over $8 million. On a barrier island tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon, Orchid Island is home to more than breathtaking views. Among championship golf, tennis, and more than a mile of pristine, secluded beach; the tranquil bike trails surrounding the Club have become immensely popular among members. Discover the many places that are sure to capture your attention and may even compel you to stop along the way!

Jungle Trail

The Treasure Coast gives sanctuary to 1,500+ species of Florida’s migratory birds and wildlife: manatees, river otters, turtles, bobcats, and the ever-majestic white pelicans. There’s no better way to explore nature than by traveling on the historic Jungle Trail, which cuts through the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Captain Forester Hammock Preserve, and of course, Orchid Island. We recommend starting your journey at the front of Orchid Island Drive and heading southbound on this scenic route. Bike riders are never short of encounters with the gorgeous surroundings and beautiful wildlife.

Jones Pier

Cycling is a low-impact form of exercise that increases strength and stamina, which can help protect you from serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Plus, you get to experience natural beauty in the surrounding areas of Orchid Island. Three miles from the Club, you’ll stumble upon Jones Pier, a hidden gem overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. Part of the Jones Pier Conservation Area, it encompasses rich history and provides the public with educational and historical display exhibits on native wildlife, foliage, and the origin story. After admiring the gorgeous view and potentially a few dolphins, venture back on the Jungle Trail and head east on Old Winter Beach Road all the way to A1A.

Disney Vero Beach Resort

As you venture north up A1A, you’ll see a popular destination right within our treasured town: Disney’s Vero Beach Resort! If this mile-marker has your legs burning, you can drop in to browse the gift shop or grab a bite to eat at the Wind & Waves Market. Don’t be surprised if you find a hidden Mickey or two as you pass through!

Beach Bites & Wabasso Beach Park

As you continue your morning cycle, you may spot a little restaurant further up A1A. Beach Bites is far from your average neighborhood café, housing a general store, souvenir shop, watersport rental, and restaurant all in one! Grab a souvenir or stop in to pick up a smoothie. Right on the beach, you’ll find just about everything you’ll need at this checkpoint.

Wabasso Beach Park lies down the street from Beach Bites. Make sure to be on the lookout for sea turtle nests as you admire ocean views from the miniature boardwalk along the Atlantic’s Treasure Coast.

Orchid Island Beach Club

As your expedition connects its circle, you may see a familiar pink building signifying the return to Orchid Island Beach Club! An issuance of red bands attached to the handlebar stem of your bike lifts the gate arms, allowing uninterrupted riding for members, ideal for biking to and from the community.

The sights and sounds that greet members daily and the benefits of bike rides here are just reminders that no other community compares to Orchid Island. The Club works hard to preserve a way of life for not only the natural neighbors who live in the area but the people who live here as well. Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club holds an annual 5K Walk/Run to support area organizations. Each year the proceeds from the event benefit a local charity or cause, which is determined earlier in the year by the Club’s Fitness & Wellness Committee. This year the Committee selected United Against Poverty IRC (UP). Due to lingering concerns regarding the Covid-19 virus, an additional option to participate in raising donations for UP was available to Members. We held a virtual run the week prior to the 5K Walk/Run that took place at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club. The Fitness team including Denise Duda, Director of Fitness, Wellness & Spa and Tiffany Long, Manager of the Tennis & Fitness Pro Shop, were able to track the miles that Members walked/ran throughout the week leading up to the actual physical 5K that took place at the Club. Progress was logged at the Tennis & Fitness Center as well as on our Club website.

This year’s 19th Annual 5K Walk/Run was held Friday, April 2nd and despite cool temperatures and windy conditions, over 50 Members and Family Guests participated. A big thank you to all 66 Members who generously sponsored the race as well as 18 virtual runners. Matt Tanner, Executive Director and George Cooper, Development Director were both on hand to personally thank all donors and participants and give an overview of how the proceeds from the 19th Annual 5K will be used.

Member Bill Badia came in as fastest Male Member finisher and Member Elke Higgins was celebrated as fastest Female Member finisher. Our virtual race mileage thermometer received the biggest bump up from Mr. Phil Gulley who logged his miles in daily for our week-long virtual run.

“Orchid Island is thrilled to support United Against Poverty, an organization that gives so much to the Community. Their work in these difficult times have made a difference to many. It is an honor to be associated with them.” shared Bill Kennedy, Orchid Island Board of Governors Tennis & Fitness Committee Chair.

A check presentation took place on Thursday, April 22, 2021. United Against Poverty IRC was extremely grateful especially in these trying times. We had our greatest donation to date. Orchid Island Golf Club was able to provide a check of $18,000 to United Against Poverty. Matt Tanner, Executive Director, was on hand to except this check.

“Thanks to the support that the Orchid Island Community has shown in our mission, the team at United Against Poverty is positioned to continue to innovate, build coalitions in our Community and have the agility and resources to rise to meet the greatest needs of our Neighbors. Our Hand UP vs a Hand Out model has impacted the lives of thousands of Residents across our great county, and with the generosity of Orchid Island, we will only further expand our impact.” expressed Matt Turner, Executive Director, United Against Poverty.

Morning walks on the beach, afternoons by the pool, and endless rounds of golf—sounds like a vacation from the hustle and bustle of the office. Not anymore. As remote working continues to grow across the country, many vacation retreats like Florida’s Treasure Coast have quickly become permanent addresses for entrepreneurs and business executives across many industries. We all know that the events of 2020 have changed the way people think about their homes and lifestyles. All across the country, residents in densely populated areas are seeking refuge in the warm open air of the Sunshine State this Winter. Broader acceptance of working remotely has also caused some to make the move to Florida to find a better balance of indoor/outdoor living. For those who dream of beachfront living or spending their afternoons on the back nine, there has never been a better time to consider living on the Treasure Coast.

Natural Barrier Island

The quaint town of Orchid, Florida located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Coast and the Indian River near Vero Beach is home to Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club. This private, low-density gated community offers its residents casual, island living with world-class amenities and the highest level of service.

Although there are many golf communities in South Florida, it’s extremely rare to find the combination of an oceanfront lifestyle and an award-winning golf club community. At Orchid Island, the lock-and-leave lifestyle of its oceanfront condominiums is experiencing rising demand from those who recognize this unique opportunity.

Nearly a Mile of Secluded Beach

The luxurious, low-rise oceanfront condominiums overlook nearly one mile of private beach. Spacious residences, oceanfront terraces and outdoor kitchens provide spectacular settings for open-air living that takes full advantage of the Atlantic views. This intimate community enjoys natural social distancing with limited access to the private elevators. Inside spacious floorplans and well-appointed living spaces feature expansive impact glass doors and windows with built-in storm shutters for resident convenience. Homeowners will enjoy the carefree condo lifestyle as well as the ideal location adjacent to the West Indies style private Beach Club at Orchid Island.

“Our oceanfront condominiums are truly unique,” says Anne Torline, Managing Broker at Orchid Island Realty. “There’s very few places where you can find this combination of lifestyle and location. We currently are offering a 3 Bedroom, 4 Full Bath residence with over 3,800 sq. ft. for $2.1 million. It’s an incredible value in this incredible community.”

Arnold Palmer Golf

At Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club no two days are alike. In addition to the oceanfront Beach Club, the resort-style amenities include the Arnold Palmer designed 18-hole championship course. This Audubon certified course offers a challenge for golfers and a chance to experience the beautiful habitat and wildlife that makes the course so unique.

The private club community offers a wide array of health and wellness amenities, an onsite Tennis and Fitness Center and a golf clubhouse that plays host to a variety of planned events. A new community kayak launch provides for up-close and personal interaction with the natural neighbors of the Indian River Lagoon, and the Orchid Island Spa is also available offering a wide array of personal treatment services.
