To an outsider, a lot of the Country Clubs in Florida seem to be similar. They have the golf and the tennis and of course the big, fancy clubhouse. However, at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, located in the Town of Orchid, in Vero Beach, “club” means much, much more. This gated private club community tucked away on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon features ten “Clubs within the Club” with a full schedule of events for Members. The variety of special interest activities allows Members to get to know each other beyond the golf course and fitness center creating lasting friendships among Members, an attribute that makes this private community truly unique.

The Arts

Whatever the choice of medium, the Art Club fosters talents and appreciates varying levels of experience. From watercolor to photography, Members can enjoy sharing their ideas as well as learning something new with a variety of classes, lectures, and even trips to local museums. Art Club talents are also showcased in the Member Art Show. Those who have been part of a choral group in the past will be pleased to find the Chorus Club. Now in its tenth year, the Chorus Club is committed to creating joy through music whether it be performing across the Treasure Coast or at Orchid Island. Club Cinema is offered for those who like to spend an evening watching the big screen. There’s always time to get lost in a great book and participate in thought-provoking discussions surrounding monthly reads with the Book Club.

Cards & Mah Jongg

There are many Bridge Clubs featured at Orchid Island including Monday Summer Club, Couples and Seasonal Bridge. Seasonal Bridge is sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). The clubs are for lovers of the game as well as those looking for a fun night with their neighbors. Newly formed in 2020, the Canasta Club invites players of all skill levels to join in on this fun card game. Mah Jongg, an ancient Chinese game with pre-set hands and tiles is another game of skill with a following at Orchid Island.

Gardening

The Garden Club is always looking to grow its membership. Those looking to learn about the flora and fauna unique to Florida, or how to grow an herb garden will find opportunity in this club. In its fifth season, the Garden Club holds events on campus, including monthly displays in the Card Room, as well as taking field trips to local farms and other beautiful places.

Sporting

With three quail plantations approximately an hour away, and a sporting clay facility nearby, the Gun Club offers opportunities for the outdoor sportsperson. For those who prefer to get out on the water, the Orchid Island Yacht Club (OIYC) offers a waterside event or a nautical outing as ways to find fun with these maritime enthusiasts. No boat is required to join this group that has grown to more than 100 members since 2002.

At Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, “Clubs within the Club” allow more than 750 Members to share their passions with other Members on a more personal level through an array of activities. Camaraderie is built among neighbors with common interests in this private seaside community.

As Vero Beach’s preferred destination for live entertainment since 1973, the Riverside Theatre has been where aspiring stars have put on performances that have wowed local audiences. Part of the theatre’s 2019 season includes Ghost Writer and My Fair Lady. Ghost Writer is the story of a secretary who continues to write her deceased charge’s works after his passing, and how society views this transgressive act. My Fair Lady is the retelling of the famous George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion, in which a young Cockney woman takes contemporary manners, society, and perceptions to task as she works with a phoneticist to prepare for her introduction into high society. Reflecting both turn-of-the-century sensibilities and modern concepts of gender and power, viewers will find plenty that reverberates with them in this performance.

68th Annual Under The Oaks Arts and Crafts Show

You may have noticed that this area has an unrivaled creative spirit. Nothing displays this better than the Under the Oaks Arts and Crafts Show. Held by the Vero Beach Art Club, its 68th year establishes it as a cultural institution for Vero Beach. The show raises money for the organization while highlighting the works of over 220 artists from across the nation. On March 9th, enjoy viewing works by artists and chowing down on local foods while touring beautiful Riverside Park.

42nd Annual Antique Auto Show

Riverside Park isn’t home to just amazing live acts or art shows – its where you can see the coolest cars of yesteryear, as well. Come March 16th, expect to see over 325 cars from the 20th century, alongside foreign and modified cars. Events will include dash plaques, trophies, and contests as car owners compete to see who owns the best automobile. When you attend, remember to bring non-perishable food items to help out the Vero Beach Post Office “Drive Out Hunger.”

Whether you choose to bike or hike, you’ll enjoy the scenery along the way, including palm tree hammocks and coastal wetland areas. You’ll also get to see some of the area’s magnificent homes. Take a look in the sky every once in a while – you might catch an osprey or a rare white pelican. Pay attention to the grasses – you might find some unique plants. When you ride by the ocean, keep your eye out on the water – there may be a dolphin or a manatee swimming by.

What could manatees, American white pelicans, and loggerhead sea turtles all have in common? At first glance, these animals don’t seem to have many similarities at all. One lays its eggs on the beach, one swims in the water, and one flies in the air. As it turns out, that these animals have much more in common than it seems!

They Love The Water

This is the obvious one. Manatees and loggerheads live their lives in the water. In fact, the turtles don’t really leave the water except to lay their eggs. Did you know that turtles return each year to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs? American white pelicans stick close to brackish water, a mix of fresh and salt water. Places like red mangroves and rivers are popular for them. To catch their meals, they can be seen corralling fish into an area and then plunging their bucket-like bills into the water. The closer that you are to the water, the more likely that you’re able to spot these animals!

They’re Protected

While loggerhead sea turtles, American white pelicans, and manatees are considered beautiful and important parts of Florida’s ecosystem, they’re also ecologically sensitive. Because of this, lawmakers and residents have worked so that certain protections ensure the safety of these animals. At Orchid Island, this can include everything from setting up special lights on the Beach Club so that baby sea turtles can’t see them to let scientists and conservationists know when a rare species has taken up residence in Orchid Island, like the pelicans. This way, we can ensure that these animals come to stay with us for a long time.

They Live at Orchid Island

Orchid Island is designated as a Certified Cooperative Audubon Sanctuary. That means that the staff and residents of the Club work to preserve the natural environment. Because of that, usually rare animals such as American white pelicans are known to migrate here. They are often seen flying over the golf courses from November through March. Manatees float placidly down the river around this area. They’re drawn to the naturally warm waters. Our beaches are some of the best and most popular nesting grounds for the loggerhead sea turtles. During peak season, their nests are marked off to protect the eggs from beachgoers. Next time that you pay a visit to Orchid Island, keep a close lookout-you may never know what you might see!

For those who want to get close to nature and enjoy the creature comforts of home, the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club amenities are second to none. Orchid Island works hard to preserve a way of life for, not only the natural neighbors who live on the Treasure Coast, but the residents as well.
