VERO BEACH, FL – The Learning Alliance (TLA) hosted an invitational breakfast on February 5 at the Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club, celebrating progress toward its goal of 90-percent of Indian River County children reading at grade level by third grade.
Board Chairman Ray Oglethorpe credited community support for TLA’s impact, noting that nearly two-thirds of students now read at grade level – the highest Indian River County has yet achieved. The district has risen to Florida’s Top 10, earning an A rating for two consecutive years. He also praised Superintendent Dr. David Moore, who was recently named “Florida’s Top Superintendent” and a finalist for the national title.
TLA’s Moonshot School at Vero Beach Elementary demonstrated remarkable progress, improving from a C- to a B rating in one year. CEO Barbara Hammond emphasized the importance of early literacy, highlighting TLA’s focus on coaching, tutoring, family partnerships, and community engagement.
Superintendent Moore underscored the district-wide impact of TLA’s work while attendees heard firsthand success stories from students, parents, and educators.
Attendees previewed a national documentary currently in production to showcase Indian River County’s literacy achievements.
