Orchid Island Natural Beauty
Go to the next content arrow

Orchid Island is a place of true beauty and natural wonder. Perfectly situated between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean, Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club is a hidden mecca for local wildlife. A variety of natural neighbors call this place home and the members here are committed to protecting the area’s natural beauty. From its status as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary to its pristine private shore, the Club recognizes that its animal neighbors, like turtles, white pelicans, and otters, are as much part of the community as the residents themselves.

One reason why Orchid Island has so many animal visitors is because of its location. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River, it boasts a mile of private beach and it’s not uncommon to see dolphins swimming in the clear greenish-blue water or sandpipers scouring along while strolling the shoreline. Come May through October, many loggerhead turtles call this beach home and lay their eggs as it’s one of the best places in the world for turtle hatchlings.

The Indian River is known as one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the world and this natural neighborhood is home to many different species of fish, birds and so much more. From the red mangroves that hug the shoreline to the seagrass beds that lie under the surface, the wildlife here is unmatched. Rare white pelicans and rosette spoonbills are known to call this place home as well as friendly manatees.

And not to be left out, the golf course at Orchid Island is also home to many varieties of wildlife. From playful otters to birds such as the white pelicans and ospreys, members here enjoy the daily sightings of the unique wildlife. The Club has also installed specialty bird boxes throughout the course and many new “members” are born here each year – including screech owls.

Orchid Island works hard to preserve a way of life not only for the natural neighbors who live in the area but for the people who live here as well. Members and residents enjoy the convenience of a golf cart lifestyle. Traveling the community via golf cart makes getting to any of the amenities a fun and enjoyable experience, including the West Indies, styled private Beach Club, which overlooks a private beach just for residents and their families to take pleasure in.

This private community is committed to providing an extraordinary level of service. Golf here is unparalleled, as the Arnold Palmer-designed, 18-hole course is not only revered as one of the best in the region but also considered a picturesque nature walk throughout this unique habitat.

Luxury residential properties range from the $800s to over $10 million and include custom estate residences, courtyard homes, cottage, or oceanfront condominiums.

Everyone has different reasons for moving to a beach town. Some appreciate the small town atmosphere, while others like how nature is essentially untouched. The Town of Orchid, just outside of Vero Beach, is one such example. Many say that Orchid Island is the perfect place for them because of the weather, the people, and the overall feeling you have in a small beach town. Here are a few reasons why you should move to our beach town.

Mood: Relaxation

It’s hard to find a frown on someone’s face when they come back from the beach. Living so close to it, it’s easy to see why the residents here seem to be in a good mood all of the time. Different parts of the oceanfront environment come together to make beachgoers feel good. The sound of the waves hitting the shore provides a calming atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the day. Sunny days are abundant here and fill you with vitamin D, naturally raising your mood as well.

Nature Abounds

The oceanfront features a diverse and vibrant ecosystem not found anywhere else. Take a look up to the sky – ospreys, eagles, and pelicans soar through the air. On the horizon, dolphins jump from the water, and schools of fish teem below the surface. From May to October, you’re likely to find a leatherback sea turtle along the shoreline laying her eggs. Check out the historic Jungle Trail, it runs right through Orchid Island, and you’re likely to catch a rare white pelican flying above the trees.

Activities and Things to Do

If there’s one thing that we can say about beach towns, it’s that they have their own way of doing things, whether it be work or play – but especially play. Swing and dance under the moonlight at the Night Sounds Concert Series, or learn of the area’s eclectic art scene at the First Friday Gallery Stroll. Then again, you don’t need a party to have fun here. Spend a few rounds playing golf, or take some time to walk along the beach.

Everyone has a reason for moving to the Town of Orchid. Some of them like the friendly locals and warm neighbors. Some appreciate living so close to the beach. Others enjoy shopping, the atmosphere, and being healthy. One thing that we can say about life in a beach town is that it’s easier. It’s easy to get around on foot, but some residents prefer getting places via golf cart. It’s one of those things that make Orchid Island stand out amongst other clubs.

For those who want to get close to nature and enjoy the creature comforts of home, the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club amenities are second to none.   Orchid Island works hard to preserve a way of life for, not only the natural neighbors who live on the Treasure Coast, but the residents as well. Members and residents also enjoy the private beach.

This private community is committed to providing a level of service that stands out from the rest. Golfing here is unparalleled, as the Arnold Palmer designed, 18-hole course is not only renowned among courses, but also holds an Audubon Certified Sanctuary status for its commitment to natural preservation.

In Vero Beach, Florida, you’ll discover the best of both worlds. That’s because Vero is at the eastern edge of the demarcation line that separates Florida into two different climate zones. North of Vero is a subtropical climate, and south of it is tropical. That’s why Vero Beach is known as the “Gateway to the Tropic” and is graced with a unique mix of vegetation. Growing here are coconut palms and bright tropical flowers that won’t grow even a few miles north. Alongside these tropical wonders, you’ll find a beautiful, rich landscape made up of ancient oak hammocks and dense pine forests. Add to that the area’s beautiful beaches and the citrus trees that thrive here, giving the area the title of “Citrus Capital of the World.” With all this environmental diversity, it’s easy to see why Vero Beach has so much natural appeal.

For many generations, Vero Beach and its surrounding areas were known as the benchmark for quality citrus production and shipment. People all over the world enjoyed the juicy Indian River citrus grown here. It wasn’t until Edwin Llwyd Ecclestone Sr. purchased the 3000-acre estate on John’s Island that the Vero Beach area began to thrive as a resort destination. Ecclestone and his team recruited Fortune 500 CEOs and entrepreneurs from up north to create a golf community that drew top tier individuals to this area. Ground was broken in 1969, and the first of three golf courses opened the next year.

In 1987, Orchid Island, north of John’s Island, followed suit, when it was sold to Robert Haines III of Avon, Connecticut, and a small group of limited partners. At that time, the town of Orchid had only seven inhabitants. Haines’ vision was to build a few hundred British West Indies–style homes overlooking the ocean, the Indian River and a spectacular golf course. Ground was broken on Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club in 1988. Just like on John’s Island, this spectacular community became a draw, attracting high-end individuals to this stunning oasis.

Soon, Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club was attracting people from every part of the country, as it had quickly become one of the most desirable oceanfront properties on the Treasure Coast, with one of Florida’s few barrier island golf courses. Throughout the generations of settlers in the Vero Beach area, there has always been a common thread—conservation and respect for the land. This long-standing culture began in the early 20th century, when Pelican Island in the Indian River Lagoon was designated as the country’s first wildlife refuge. The area has always been developed thoughtfully and with care. Instead of the urban sprawl that defines other parts of Florida, this area was planned in an organized fashion, taking green spaces into account and preserving beautiful, historic structures, allowing it to retain a charming, small-town flavor.

For those who want to get close to nature and enjoy the creature comforts of home, the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club amenities are second to none.   Orchid Island works hard to preserve a way of life for, not only the natural neighbors who live on the Treasure Coast, but the residents as well. Members and residents also enjoy private beach access and what are even better, Orchid Island spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian River.

This private community is committed to providing a level of service that stands out from the rest. Golfing here is unparalleled, as the Arnold Palmer designed, 18-hole course is not only renowned among courses, but also holds an Audubon Certified Sanctuary status for its commitment to natural preservation.

It’s hard to believe all of the fun that awaits you at Orchid Island. Between the championship golf, private beach and island lifestyle, there’s something for everyone. We’re happy to share some secrets with a fun game of “Three Truths and a Myth”—see if you can guess them!

You can get anywhere within Orchid Island by golf cart

It’s true! Golf carts are the preferred method of travel within the neighborhood—even though the community is big enough to grant residents the space that they want, all of its amenities can be reached within golf cart driving distance. Whether you want to enjoy some fun in the sun at the beach or pool, dine out or go for a workout at the Tennis & Fitness Center, you simply get in your own golf cart and you’re where you want to be in a matter of five minutes or less. And that also means you can keep your set of golf clubs in your cart so when you’re ready to hit a ball or two, you can just hop in and head on over to the putting green, driving range or 1st tee!

Orchid Island has over a mile of its own private beach

It’s not hard to appreciate Florida’s natural beauty when you have over a mile of secluded beach to enjoy. Orchid Island residents can swim, sunbathe and surf the day away at the private oceanfront overlooks by the Beach Club and just on the other side of our oceanfront residents’ backyards. Lucky visitors have even caught sight of dolphins, sea turtles and white pelicans!

Residents enjoy a golf course designed by Arnold Palmer.

Residents and their guests can enjoy playing on a golf course that was designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer. He designed the unique course so that players of all skill sets can find their difficulty curve. Fun fact—the course is also part of Orchid Island’s Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary Program. Keep your eye on the ball—and out for wildlife!

Orchid Island’s signature drink is the White Orchid

When residents are looking to cool off from playing in the sun all day, they head to the Turtle Bar located poolside at the Beach Club and order a freshly shaken cocktail of their liking. Bartenders might not recognize a White Orchid, but they love to mix up the signature drink of the Club, which is the very yummy and refreshing Thirsty Turtle! Mixing in sweet and tangy, this drink highlights the flavors of Florida!

Living a healthy lifestyle is easy at Orchid Island thanks to the community’s Tennis & Fitness Center with over 11,000 square feet devoted to healthy living. With licensed and knowledgeable personal trainers, the member-owned club tailors programs designed to guide and motivate every personal fitness quest. Onsite physical therapists can develop a personalized treatment plan for those in need of physical rehab. With so much going on, it’s no wonder that Orchid Island’s director of fitness, wellness, and spa, Denise Duda, is always kept on her toes.

Though Duda now spends her days helping others fall in love with fitness, she hasn’t always worked in the fitness industry. Her career began in resort management and in-house customer service training at Seascape Beach Resort & Conference Center in California. However, as many people well understand, your first career isn’t necessarily the one that you stick with. In the early 1990s, Duda took a step back from her hospitality career to take an overall look at her life and found that her true passion was in making a difference in the lives of those around her. “I loved working in my industry,” says Duda, “but I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life.”

Now, Duda dedicates her time to working directly with people, building relationships and helping people on their fitness journey. Duda began with her own studio where she was named one of Brevard County’s top personal trainers by Space Coast Living magazine. She then went on to become director of operations at the Brevard County YMCA Family & Wellness Center, before eventually finding her way to Orchid Island.

At Orchid Island, Duda has the chance to make a difference in someone’s life every day by helping residents lead a healthier lifestyle.

With Orchid Island’s calendar jam packed with activities, members have the opportunity to be busy, moving and on the-go—which sometimes means they can be in a little need of some R and R. Members have the opportunity to relax and indulge in the extensive selection of spa treatments offered at Orchid Island’s day spa. The luxurious spa offers a long list of services such as rejuvenating facials, body treatments and massages. After a tough match on the tennis courts, or a long day on the golf course, or just for a treat, Orchid Island’s spa is ready to take you away.

The Spa at Orchid Island, which has two treatment rooms, can be found at the Beach Club. For those who play golf and tennis, the therapeutic massage can be an excellent preventive treatment. Not only will it reduce the occurrence of injuries, but it can also help relax the muscles.

Besides instructing and running the operations of the fitness club and spa, Duda spends most of her time working with members. Her fitness classes and personalized programs take place in the state-of-the-art Tennis & Fitness Center. Occasionally, her classes incorporate Orchid Island’s breathtaking scenery by including a beach workout.

Orchid Island also has personalized training, in addition to its fun and lively exercise classes. The classes, taught by any of the four or five fitness instructors, are exciting and current and can help contribute to personalized goals. Personalized training and care offers exclusive and comprehensive advantages. With wear and tear comes the need to make sure that what you do is correct for your body and your individual physical needs. “It’s important to make sure members are taking care of their bodies’ individual needs, says Duda. “Each member is different and so are their bodies’ requirements.”

Health and wellness is built into Orchid Island’s core. Duda makes sure to keep in constant contact with the chef in order to make sure members’ individual needs are met in the kitchen as well as the gym. “The chef is very open to working in tandem to provide healthy options,” she says. “What you eat is going to affect you as much as exercise does, and if you’re trying to lose weight, nutrition is the biggest hurdle.” Even though the menus at the Pool Grille, Golf Club and Beach Club have some staples, they’re subject to change daily. The partnership helps to make sure there are clean and healthy menu options available at all dining venues. Alongside a local nutritionist who is available for members on request, Duda recommends menu options to guests and members to help them reach their goals.

Duda’s passion is palpable, which is naturally encouraging to members of the Club. “The most rewarding thing about [my job] is the member interactions and watching people reach their goals,” she says. “It’s not just weight loss. Maybe it’s increasing healthy cholesterol or fighting an illness.”

Whether members are beginning a new training program or they are new to the Club, Duda and her staff help them get started by stepping on a scale that quickly measures bone weight, muscle mass and body fat. The personalized and customized training program of an individual member will outline whatever the member is trying to improve. “We start at whatever baseline they have, and try to improve on that,” Duda explains, describing what a personalized program might look like. Once members have tried this super scale, known as the InBody, they can check their progress against those original measurements.

At Orchid Island, there’s always a way to get active. Members can enjoy an active lifestyle year-round thanks to the variety of amenities in the community. With such an exquisite view, how could you not want to take to the golf course, explore the Treasure Coast, or sign up for a pickleball lesson?

Lauded as one of the most visually stunning and exclusive barrier island clubs, Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club is a private, gated residential golf course community in Florida.
