Beyond the Golf Course: What Defines Life at Orchid Island

Posted on: September 9, 2026
Read time: 5 minutes

For experienced private-club buyers, the golf course is often the easiest place to begin a comparison. Course architecture, conditioning and quality of play are tangible. But they do not necessarily reveal how a club will fit into everyday life.

The truer measure may be what happens beyond the round, how naturally a morning on the course becomes lunch with friends, an afternoon by the ocean, a fitness class or an impromptu dinner. At Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club in Vero Beach, those experiences are not separate stops on an amenity list. They are part of how the day unfolds.

Golf remains a defining part of that experience. Orchid Island’s 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed championship course provides a strong foundation, supported by recent improvements to the green complexes and practice area. But General Manager Rob Tench points to something equally important: members tend to stay engaged with the Club throughout the day, moving among golf, racquets, fitness, dining and social activities rather than arriving for one purpose and leaving.

Golf Sets the Standard, but Not the Schedule

That distinction becomes apparent as soon as the round is over.

At the Racquet and Sports Complex, tennis, pickleball, croquet and bocce offer as much opportunity for connection as competition. Eight Har-Tru tennis courts support regular play, while the Pelican Pavilion at the center of the complex has become part of the experience itself, a place for a cocktail, a light bite or conversation before the next part of the day begins. Rob Tench specifically described the pavilion as a social gathering place before and after activities.

The significance is not how many activities appear on a list. It is the ease with which one interest can lead to another. A morning match can become lunch with friends. Golf can give way to a workout. An afternoon can shift from competition to conversation without requiring members to leave the community in search of what comes next.

Wellness, Woven Into the Day

Orchid Island offers personal training, group fitness, Pilates, yoga, spinning and on-site physical therapy. Rob describes wellness as an important part of the Club’s culture, with members using the fitness center regularly as part of everyday life.

The Beach Club renovation now underway will carry that commitment further. Plans include an entirely new spa, two oceanfront beach suites and an expanded Seaside Lounge, along with additional updates to the Beach Club. Construction began in May 2026, with the Seaside Lounge scheduled for completion in December 2026 and the spa and beach suites targeted for May 2027.

The new spa is being designed around relaxation and restoration, with treatment spaces, steam and sauna facilities, a relaxation room and other traditional spa services. More important to this story, it extends an established wellness culture rather than introducing something disconnected from the way members already use the Club.

The Places That Bring People Together

At the Golf Club, a recent expansion added an outdoor bar, open-air dining and a fire pit, giving members another place to stay after golf rather than treating the round as the end of the day. Tench described the addition as particularly popular with members.

Dining creates another natural point of connection. Executive Chef Chris Sozio’s program includes health-conscious choices and accommodations for special dietary needs, while the Club’s different dining settings allow a casual lunch, drinks after an activity or dinner with friends to feel like part of the same day rather than a separate occasion.

At the Beach Club, the reimagined Seaside Lounge will offer more room to gather while preserving the intimate character members have long valued. Expanded ocean views, thoughtful design enhancements and improved acoustics are intended to elevate the experience without changing what has made the lounge successful. Member feedback helped shape the evolution of the space, influencing its configuration, sound treatments and preservation of familiar furnishings.

That responsiveness says something meaningful about the culture of a member-owned Club: improvement can enhance the member experience without erasing the character members already value.

Between the Ocean and the Lagoon

Then there is a distinction that no renovation can create.

At Orchid Island, the Atlantic Ocean lies in one direction and the Indian River Lagoon in the other. Nearly one mile of private beach brings swimming, walking and time along the shore into everyday life, while the western side of the community opens toward kayaking, paddleboarding and boating.

That ocean-to-river setting expands the possibilities naturally. Golf matters. So do wellness, racquets, dining and time on the water. Each has its own place, but none needs to carry the entire experience.

How It All Comes Together

With just 375 residences, Orchid Island combines the familiarity of a smaller private-club community with a remarkably complete daily experience. Manager RobTench has pointed to that intimacy as part of the Club’s appeal: members can enjoy a broad range of amenities while retaining the sense of familiarity that comes with a more contained community.

The current Beach Club investment reinforces that approach. Rather than adding amenities simply for novelty, the Club is expanding experiences members already value, wellness, gathering, dining and time by the ocean, while preserving the qualities that make those places feel distinctly Orchid Island.

Because ultimately, the measure of a great private club is not the length of its amenity list. It is how naturally those experiences come together, and how easily a prospective member can imagine living among them day after day.
